Sustainability

Sustainability? Of course!

Growing flowers with passion and not working sustainably? That is not the case with us. We do work sustainably. Of course! Our chrysanthemums make the world happier, in every way. Just like our people and production processes. How do we do that, working sustainably?

Less Impact

Every grower’s goal? Strong, beautiful blooms – grown smart. We keep energy and water use as light as we can, and lean into biological crop protection wherever possible. That’s how we grow top-quality chrysanthemums, with a footprint that stays as small as it can be.

Do you choose sustainable varieties?

Definitely. When selecting varieties, we look beyond looks alone. We pay attention to things like pest sensitivity, how evenly the plants grow, and how much growth regulation they need during cultivation. Before a variety makes an introduction, we always test it thoroughly in real growing conditions.

The stronger and more uniform the variety, the less we need to step in. That makes growing more efficient and a lot more sustainable. So every variety we choose is a small step towards smarter, greener growing—without ever compromising on quality.

Do you use renewable energy?

Yes. Across our locations, we’re steadily increasing the use of renewable energy and reducing overall energy demand wherever possible.

We generate our own electricity with solar panels and use heat pumps to heat our buildings and greenhouses without gas. Any surplus energy is stored in batteries, so it can be used later when needed. We also reuse heat through air handling systems and retain warmth in the greenhouse with energy screens. At several locations, we additionally use geothermal energy, drawing heat from the earth for sustainable heating.

Step by step, this is how we reduce our energy use and build a more sustainable energy system.

How do you handle water at Zentoo?

We give water with care – exactly when the plant needs it, and never more than necessary. Rainwater is collected, filtered, and reused, and even drainage water gets a second life in the system. We also take part in the Polder Approach, working together with others to monitor and improve water quality. This includes regularly measuring ditch water ourselves.

With the help of a water coach, we map all our water flows, so we can keep the system as closed as possible and stay mindful of any risks along the way.

How do you take care of soil health?

Healthy soil means strong roots and beautiful chrysanthemums. That’s why, after every harvest, we give our soil a little boost with biostimulants. These help improve soil structure, stimulate root growth, and support all the life working below the surface. We only use natural ingredients—like humic acids, amino acids, plant extracts, seaweed, fungi, and beneficial bacteria.

The result? A soil that stays in balance, and less need for intensive treatments like steaming.

What is the project 100% green?

Zentoo takes part in the ‘100% Green Grown’ pilot – a collaborative initiative in greenhouse horticulture focused on building a fully green and resilient way of growing. Within this pilot, we’re steadily replacing chemical crop protection with biological and preventive solutions wherever possible. Our ambition is clear: by 2030, we aim to grow without any chemical crop protection at all

What natural methods do you use to manage pests?

At Zentoo, we focus as much as possible on biological crop protection. That means we tackle pests like thrips, spider mites, and aphids with natural allies such as predatory mites, parasitic wasps, and ladybugs.

Each location works with a dedicated crop protection plan, with prevention at its core. Careful scouting is essential, so we can spot anything early and stay one step ahead. And from Q2 2026 onwards, all our sites will be equipped with insect netting, helping keep unwanted insects mostly outside where they belong.

Healthy people

Flowers make you happy and less stressed. It is our mission to share this with everyone. Our employees work extremely hard to deliver the best chrysanthemums. That is why we invest in a pleasant and healthy workplace.

Do you offer internship positions?

Yes! Every year, we offer one to two internship spots at our office and in our distribution center. You’ll also regularly find interns at our greenhouses.

We love working with students from VMBO, MBO, and HBO programs, and we’re big believers in giving young talent the chance to get real, hands-on experience in the sector.

Do you use robotics in the greenhouse?

Yes –  step by step, our greenhouse is getting smarter. For example, we already use a disbudding robot, and we’re exploring options for a packaging robot as well. These help us with repetitive tasks, making the work lighter and more efficient.

We also use digital systems and sensors to closely monitor the climate and growing conditions. This gives us real-time insight into what’s happening in the greenhouse, so we can adjust quickly whenever needed.

Do you work with flexible labor?

Yes. At our growing locations and in our distribution center, we work with flexible workers.

We partner with trusted, long-term staffing agencies to make sure everything runs smoothly. This helps us ensure continuity, clear agreements, and good quality on the work floor.

How do you create little moments of happiness?

Our mission is to put a smile on people’s faces every day and bring them a little closer together. With our colourful flowers, we create small moments of happiness that feel bigger than they are — from a spontaneous gift to a cheerful touch at home.

Our chrysanthemums help make that happen: they stay beautiful in the vase for at least two weeks, and often even longer. That means you enjoy your bouquet for longer and waste less along the way.

And with chrysanthemums becoming more and more sustainably grown, they’re a beautiful and thoughtful choice for today.

What is your sponsorship policy?

Our sponsorship policy focuses on initiatives that are closely connected to our own field and where there’s a real link with what we do. We only support projects that align with our identity and bring mutual value for Zentoo – whether that’s in relationships, visibility, or collaboration.

These can be big or small initiatives, but we especially value projects close to our activities, including local ones. That way, sponsorship stays relevant and meaningful for both sides.

Reduce waste

We want to reduce our environmental impact by using as few raw materials as possible for our packaging, and by cutting down waste streams across all our locations.

Do you work with reusable packaging?

Yes. The auction boxes and buckets we use are reusable. Our own packaging is single-use, but made of about 60% recyclable material. We’re continuously working on improving this and making it more circular over time.

How do you create a good climate in the greenhouse?

We actively manage a stable and efficient greenhouse climate. With modern climate systems, we control temperature, air circulation, and humidity – so plants can grow in the best possible conditions, and we can keep harvesting even during warmer periods.

We also use energy screens inside the greenhouse. Think of them as a cozy blanket for the crop: they help keep the warmth in during colder periods and reduce energy loss at the same time.

Is the sleeve made from recyclable material?

Not yet. By 2030, using recyclable material will be required. We’re already working on this transition and expect to make steps before then, aiming to use at least 30% recyclable material in the meantime.

What do you do with all the extra energy?

We generate our own electricity with solar panels and use heat pumps to warm our buildings and greenhouses without gas. And when we produce more energy than we need, we store the surplus in batteries. Think of those batteries as our energy savings account. When the sun is shining, we store the extra power and later, when evenings are darker or cloudy days roll in, we tap back into that stored energy.

That way, we keep things smart, flexible, and less dependent on the grid.

What happens to plant waste?

After harvesting, roots and leaf residues remain in the soil. These are directly worked back into the ground.

Any remaining plant waste is collected in containers and picked up to be processed into compost. That way, plant waste gets a second life and we keep the cycle going.

What is Vista?

Vista is our B-brand within the chrysanthemum range. These are flowers that fall into B-quality—for example because they are slightly lighter in weight or a bit shorter in length. They don’t meet the A-standard, but they’re still perfectly usable for specific applications and markets.

With Vista, we make sure these flowers still find a valuable destination, helping us reduce waste across the chain and make the most of every stem.

Follow our journey!

Follow our journey as we challenge ourselves to be as sustainable as possible. A journey where we invest in ways to optimise plant health and use energy and water as efficiently as possible. Where we work on circular waste streams and packaging solutions. And where we strive to create a safe and enjoyable workplace for all our employees. There is still plenty to do!
